The Community Builders was the development consultant and has remained the managing agent for this 125-unit HUD 202/8 property located in the Mission Hill section of Boston since initial occupancy in February 1981.
The owner, The Back of the Hill Community Development Corporation, is a group consisting of area residents who were responsible for the initial development of the property. Their objective was to provide a mixed housing development for both elderly and physically challenged populations. Forty-five percent of the units contain accessible features. The CDC maintains an office at the property which affords continuous interaction with the on-site staff. The full board of directors meets regularly with on-site and senior staff and is actively involved in annual budget reviews, monthly financial report reviews, and policy decisions that effect both the residents and physical plant. TCB works closely with the CDC to proactively address the social and supportive needs of both the frail elderly and younger disabled residents in the development. A daily lunch program, exercise program, benefits counseling, homecare referrals, social activities, and crisis intervention referrals are provided by a full-time resident services coordinator. TCB funds the service coordination from a five-year grant award from HUD. Back of the Hill has also served as an intern site for graduate students for the Boston University School of Social Work.
In November 1997, Back of the Hill was awarded the Connie Williams Award by the Citizens Housing and Planning Association (CHAPA) which "recognizes the Elderly Housing Manager and the Resident Service Coordinator who make it possible for the residents to remain in their homes and most successfully as they age."
