The Community Builders has managed Central Grammar Apartments in Gloucester since its initial occupancy in 1975. This 80-unit, Section 13A property was the first conversion of a school building into affordable elderly housing in the country. Management meets regularly with the board of directors of the sponsor, the Gloucester Development Team, to review the property's operational and fiscal health. Community Builders' staff also worked extensively with the board in a resyndication of the property. The original architect, who sits on the board, is always available to consult management personnel about physical plant needs and renovations. At Central Grammar, the site manager is intensively involved in the coordination and delivery of supportive services on the site. One-quarter of her time is devoted to coordinating monthly inter-agency meetings, referrals for homecare and other specialized services, blood pressure and podiatry services, and crisis interventions. She works very closely with homecare and Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) service providers in the area. In addition, she provides ongoing social activities with the residents to decrease isolation and increase the opportunity to socialize in the building.
