Karen Kelleher joined The Community Builders, Inc. (TCB) in August 1999 and became its General Counsel in June of 2004. In that capacity, she leads a team of six lawyers in representing TCB, its affiliates, and other nonprofit organizations on all aspects of complex real estate and housing development transactions. Representation includes advice and negotiation concerning complex financing transactions; analysis of applicable statutory and regulatory frameworks; commercial leasing; real property purchase and sale transactions; zoning, title and real estate conveyancing matters; limited partnerships; and closing on financing with public and private lenders and investors.
Ms. Kelleher joined The Community Builders, Inc. from the law firm of Nixon Peabody LLP. Her practice there focused upon representation of investors, syndicators, lenders, developers and owners of low-income housing tax credit and other affordable housing projects, including structuring, financing, tax, zoning, environmental and general real estate matters. In addition, she advised owners and developers of affordable housing regarding HUD regulatory matters, including the Section 8 Mark to Market, CDBG, HOME, Economic Development Initiative, and Section 108 programs.
From 1994 to 1997, Ms. Kelleher served as an Attorney Advisor in the Office of General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, DC. She received her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center in 1994 and is a 1990 magna cum laude graduate of Boston College. She was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in January of 1995 and is a member of the ABA Forum on Affordable Housing and Community Development.
